What is VPN (Virtual Private Networking ) ?

VPN gives extremely secure connections between private networks linked through the Internet. It allows remote computers to act as though they were on the same secure, local network.

An IP phone uses Voice over IP technologies allowing telephone calls to be made over an IP network such as the internet instead of the ordinary PSTN system. Calls can traverse the Internet, or a private IP Network such as that of a company.

Since CMFRI Head Quarters and 10 CMFRI Research Centers are connected using VPN , anybody can call from all extension phones in CMFRI Head Quarters to the IP phones provided in the 10 Research Centers.

IP phones in CMFRI Research Centers can be used for calling to all extension phones in CMFRI Head Quarters and IP phones in other CMFRI Research Centers.

All bonafide officials in CMFRI campus or those with access to CMFRI LAN will have right to access the least bandwidth available in headquarters.

1. The administrator or an official nominated by the Director for the system administration will have the complete control over the bandwidth management
2.  High level privileges will be given to Director,HOD’s, SIC’s, SAO,SFAO.

Category 1: High level access includes the following:

1.      24 hour uninterrupted access.

2.      Access to sites not blocked the content filtering mechanism.

3.      Unlimited download /upload.

4.      Streaming audio/ video, chatting, instant messaging ,VOIP.

3. Category  2 :  Medium level privileges will be given to all scientific staff and research scholars 

    recommended by competent authority. Medium level access includes the following:

       1.  24 hour uninterrupted access.

                   2.  Access to sites not blocked the content filtering mechanism.

                   3.  Unlimited download /upload.

                   4.  Streaming audio/ video, chatting, instant messaging ,VOIP not permitted                  

                        after office hours.

    4.   Category 3 : All others will have the following privileges:.

1.      24 hour uninterrupted access

2.      Access to sites not blocked the content filtering mechanism.

3.      download /upload limited to 200MB per day.

4.      Streaming audio/ video, chatting, instant messaging ,VOIP not 

         permitted during office hours.

 5.        The privileges to be assigned to dignitaries and other visitors will be decided as per the requests of sponsoring division.

 6.        Permission to use the network will be controlled by the system administrator.

 7.        Internet access to newly installed machines will be subjected to the Division/Section/Cell wise ceiling approved by the competent authority.

            Similar policy will be put in place in the regional /research stations. The regulations to be followed in the contest of bandwidth management will be continuously monitored and suitable modifications will be put in place as and when required with the concurrence of Director.

       There is no facility to change the password directly by the user. If any user forget or  want to change the password  he/she can contact Network Administrator.
